The military robot Big Dog controversy began when the Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program posted on their website the request, "Multi-Robot Pursuit System".

The proposal describes the need to:

"…develop a software/hardware suit that would enable a multi-robot team, together with a human operator, to search for and detect a non-cooperative human subject.

The main research task will involve determining the movements of the robot team through the environment to maximize the opportunity to find the subject, while minimizing the chances of missing the subject. If the operator is an active member of the search team, the software should minimize the chance that the operator may encounter the subject."

About that time, Boston Dynamics posted a video of the miltary's top secret military robot Big Dog program.

The way Big Dog moves really freaks people out. It has led some to charge that a real brain is inside the large black compartment that sits on top of the long, living dog like legs.

YouTube-izen Hotstuffsmartass says, "When I first saw this, I was horrified. See the way it moves? Somethings not right. Could there be a real brain inside that thing that makes it move so...sickly?"

I must admit, after watching the video of the military robot Big Dog, I'm a little freaked out myself. Especially when the video shows a guy kicking Big Dog as hard as he can from the side and how Big Dog responds with leg motions like a real dog that prevent it from falling!

In another sequence, Big Dog walks over black ice and slips and slides like a real 4-legged animal but does not fall. It's as creepy as creepy gets.

The problem I have with this wacked out conspiracy theory is the same problem I have with most. They take something that is a little creepy, like the animal like ability of those legs, and they create a theory that requires the total suspension of logical thinking.

With all the people involved in making the military robot Big Dog, somebody would come forward or at least leak out the fact that they were taking real brains and sticking them inside these black boxes. It would be the greatest conspiracy the world has ever known to keep something like this secret.

Now matter how secretive the military is or how much you might dislike what they do to keep America and her allies safe, accusing them of being some type of tech-zombie that feeds on brains is absurd.

My opinion is that no brain is inside Big Dog. Here is the video that started the controversy. You watch it and decide for yourself.
