How To Buy a Autonomous Programmable Robot For Less Than $100

This reprogrammable robot comes fully assembled including a built-in BASIC Stamp® 2 microcontroller brain. It is called the Parallax Scribbler Robot. It arrives pre-programmed with eight demo modes, including light-seeking, object detection, object avoidance, line-following, and more. Place a marker in its Pen Port and the Scribbler draws as it drives. Write your own programs in two formats: graphically with the Scribbler Program Maker GUI software, or as PBASIC text with the BASIC Stamp Editor.

The Scribbler is a fully programmable, intelligent robot with multiple sensor systems that let it interact with people and objects. It navigates on its own as it explores its surroundings, and then reports back about what it senses using light and sound.

Programming the Scribbler Robot

The Scribbler Robot has a reprogrammable “brain” – the BASIC Stamp® 2 microcontroller. Connect your Scribbler to your personal computer with the serial cable provided. Then, write your own program with your choice of free software. Download your program, disconnect the serial cable, and your Scribbler is ready to carry out its new mission.

Program with Graphics

Build programs in pictures instead of words with the Scribbler Program Maker GUI (Graphical User Interface). Point and click to select different tiles, place them in your program, and set their actions. Control the Scribbler Robot’s motors, lights, and sensors, and even play music on its speaker. Once you load your program into the Scribbler with a single click, you can unplug the programming cable. The Scribbler does not need to stay connected to your computer to carry out your mission. Fun for roboticists age 8 and up, but powerful enough to keep even experienced programmers engaged.

Programming in PBasic

Write your own programs for your Scribbler Robot with the BASIC Stamp Editor. The straightforward PBASIC programming language gives you direct access to your robot’s sensors, actuators, and drive motors. Load your custom program into the on-board BASIC Stamp microcontroller then disconnect the cable. Once reprogrammed, the Scribbler Robot does not need to maintain the computer connection. You can easily re-load the original factory Demo Program which is included on the Parallax Software CD.

Your programs can interface with these Scribbler components: 3 photoresistor light sensors, 2 Infrared object sensors, 2 Infrared line detection sensors, 2 independent DC motors Stall sensor Speaker with full range of notes 3 LED indicator lights.

The Scribbler Robot kit includes: Fully assembled Scribbler Robot Programming Cable (serial). The Scribbler Robot Start-up Guide. Scribbler Software and Documentation. CD-ROM Requires 6 AA alkaline, standard or NiMH batteries, not included. Programming the Scribbler requires a PC running Windows 2000/XP/Vista with an available serial port OR a USB port with a USB to Serial (RS-232) Adapter.
